Description
Material/Weight
(2008-2021) Land Cruiser 200 Series and LX570 Transmission Skid Plate
Catalytic converters are expensive. There are four of them welded into two mid pipes that cost over $2000 to replace, protect them accordingly. This skid was the skid that required Bud to do extensive heat testing because of the incredible heat that a Toyota 5.7L V8 can create. Seven months, three states, southern summer temperatures, low range rock crawling. We tested over 20 areas under the 200 platform with factory skids, with no skids, with several different BudBuilt Prototype skid plates. The final sharp of this skid plate creates the same temperatures as no skids under the transmission, but protecting the vulnerable catalytic converts. When the front axle comes off an obstacle or ledge, you will always hit right in the center of the transmission pan. If there is off center rock, it could be the end of that cat. This skid was further reinforced with four asymmetrical internal reinforcing ribs to minimize bending under a three ton plus Toyota.
Bolt-on design that can easily be removed
Zero increase of heat retention compared to factory design
Maintains near factory ground clearance under the center of the Cruiser
100% North American materials
Laser cut and CNC bent for precision accuracy and tight tolerances
100% fabricated by the small team of engineers and craftsman that are BudBuilt
3/16" High Carbon Steel
- 53
pounds (24kg)
Durable and strong, steel is the workhorse of armor. Ready to take hard hits from rocks and stumps. We recommend 3/16" steel where the application sees occasional to frequent rock impacts. Steel requires powder coating or user-applied paint to prevent rust.
3/16" Stainless Steel
- 53
pounds (24kg)
With the same durability and strength of steel, 304 stainless steel has the additional benefit of not requiring paint to prevent rust. Most of our stainless steel users choose this material because with regular rock impacts, even industrial powder coating can be scraped off. Stainless steel offers users the freedom to drag our armor over obstacles and not require prepping and repainting impact areas.
1/8" (3.175mm) "Lite" Steel
- 35
pounds (15.9kg)
A great, cost effective alternative to aluminum, 1/8" lite steel will protect your drivetrain from damage. We recommend 1/8" lite steel where the application sees regular off-roading, yet very limited potential for regular sharp rock impacts. 1/8" lite steel is more susceptible to denting than 3/16" steel, yet this issue only presents itself during heavy single point impacts, like that of a large sharp rock. 1/8" lite steel requires powder coating or user-applied paint to prevent rust.
1/4" (6.35mm) Aluminum Alloy
- 24
pounds (10.9kg)
Strength without the weight. Our 3003 laser cut aluminum alloy has the same strength levels as our 3/16" steel, but at a faction of the weight. We
recommend aluminum where the application sees regular off-roading, yet limited potential for dragging on hard surfaces like rocks. While 1/4" aluminum has the strength to handle heavy rock impacts, it is much more susceptible to galling than steel, when dragged over rocks.
Galling
results in what looks like fine aluminum shavings by the rock that was dragged down the plate.
Another way of thinking about this is by first stating that
aluminum has no problem at impacting an obstacle, it's what happens after impact that matters. After impact, if your driving style is to reassess the trail and choose a better line, aluminum is the right choice. If your driving style is to continue on the same line, as in rock crawling applications, we would recommend our 3/16" steel (Rock Armor) systems. Aluminum does
not require prepping and repainting impact areas to prevent rust.
